During Prime Minister Hun Manet's visit to Vietnam on the 11th and 12th, Vietnam** expressed concern about the "Duc Chong Phu Nam Canal".
According to the feasibility study, the project will not have any negative impact on the ecological environment of the Mekong River, according to Hun Manet.
Cambodia built the canal in order to develop waterway transportation and promote economic and development.
It is understood that in May this year, the cabinet meeting deliberated and approved the report of the "Baise River Logistics System and Waterway Transport Development Project", planning to build a 180-kilometer-long inland waterway system, and named it "Dechongfu South Canal".
The canal will create a 180-kilometre inland canal between the seaport of Kep province and the port of Phnom Penh in Zion district, Kandal province, spanning four provinces, namely Kep, Kampot, Takeo and Kandal.
With a total investment of US$1.7 billion, the project will build 3 canal traffic navigation stations and 11 bridges across the river, which is expected to take four years.
The project's environmental impact assessment also concluded that there would be no significant backflow of seawater inland and alteration of the hydrological cycle.
In October this year, in Beijing, Cambodia** and China Road and Bridge signed a cooperation framework agreement on the "Dechong Funan Canal Project". The latter will take up to 8 months to conduct a comprehensive study of the project. Eight months later, the two sides decided to sign the construction agreement.
It is understood that after the completion of the project, it will significantly reduce Cambodia's high transportation and logistics costs, develop new satellite ports, expand agriculture, irrigation, aquaculture and animal husbandry development zones, and further promote economic and social development.
