In the last century, Vietnam finally gained independence after decades of war. Surprisingly, however, Vietnam did not show a desire to rebuild after the war, but instead tried to expand externally with the help of military force. In addition to launching attacks on Cambodia and Laos, Vietnam has repeatedly provoked on the Sino-Vietnamese border. Although China initially tried to resolve the conflict by peaceful means, Vietnam, relying on Soviet support, did not pay any attention to China.
In this context, in order to defend national sovereignty, China had to take counterattack actions, so the self-defense counterattack war against Vietnam began. However, many people have doubts about this war, and one of them is: why did the squadron withdraw in a hurry after only 28 days of fighting?First of all, although the squadron captured most of the towns in northern Vietnam in just 28 days, if it continued to advance southward, it was even possible to directly capture Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
However, China's main purpose in waging this war was to teach Vietnam a lesson. Obviously, the strong offensive of the squadron has already achieved the desired effect, so there is no need to continue to advance south. After all, at that time, China was under tremendous pressure to send troops to Vietnam, and once Hanoi was captured, the nature of the war would fundamentally change, and China would be blamed as an aggressor. Therefore, in order to avoid creating excuses for other countries, China had to hastily withdraw its troops.
Secondly, since the beginning of the Sino-Soviet war, the Soviet Union has repeatedly deployed troops on the Sino-Soviet border. Even if the war of self-defense and counterattack against Vietnam begins, China still needs to deploy a large number of troops in the north to prevent contingencies. This means that China always needs to be vigilant against possible actions by the Soviet Union. No matter how you look at it, fighting on multiple fronts at the same time was not good for China at that time. Therefore, it would be absolutely wise to withdraw troops before the Soviet Union could react. Finally, Vietnam's strength should not be underestimated.
If the squadron continues to advance southward, it will face complex terrain that is mostly mountainous, and in such a battlefield, the squadron is bound to be at a disadvantage. In addition, Vietnam had been at war with the United States for 20 years, and their fighting power was by no means easy. At that time, most of Vietnam's main forces were stationed in Cambodia, and in the event of an emergency in Hanoi, Vietnam would inevitably mobilize these troops to defend itself, and China would inevitably face fierce fighting.
In general, although China has been developing for decades before the war of self-defense and counterattack against Vietnam, continuing to fight will not only cause losses to China, but also inflict even greater losses on Vietnam. Therefore, it would be wise for China to withdraw its troops in a timely manner. Many Vietnamese later said that our troops had retreated in time, otherwise they would have experienced an even more tragic fate. Generally speaking, the tragic situation of the counterattack against Vietnam was completely the result of Vietnam's own suffering, and they reaped the consequences of their own efforts, and they could no longer blame others.
At the same time, through this war, our country has once again demonstrated to the whole world our determination to resist aggression. It can be said that our country has been able to enjoy a relatively peaceful and stable development environment for decades since then, partly thanks to the warning effect of this war.
