Will methanol cars grow into pure electric products, another star player?

Mondo Technology Updated on 2024-01-29

Under the "dual carbon" goal, how to efficiently use clean energy has become a hot topic in the field of transportation. In recent years, whether it is pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, China has continued to explore and develop multi-energy power systems. In this context, methanol vehicles have gradually entered the industry's vision with their unique advantages.

Like pure electric vehicles and hydrogen energy vehicles, methanol vehicles are also new energy vehicles. However, methanol vehicles do not add electricity or hydrogen, and they rely on methanol fuel for driving on the road. As a low-carbon fuel, methanol can reduce the emission of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, thereby reducing environmental pollution. In addition, methanol burns efficiently, which improves fuel efficiency and reduces energy consumption.

It is understood that methanol is liquid at room temperature and pressure, and its low-temperature adaptability is better than that of power batteries and fuel cells, similar to diesel, even if it is cold soaked for 8-16 hours in the cold winter of minus 36, the methanol engine can be started at one time, maintain a good operating condition, and fully meet the needs of the working conditions in the northern winter.

At the same time, methanol is also a renewable energy source. Methanol is manufactured using fossil fuels, but these fossil fuels can be harnessed through carbon capture and storage technologies** to achieve carbon neutrality. In addition, methanol can also be obtained through biomass conversion, waste**, etc., making it more widely sustainable. Overall, methanol vehicles are cleaner and more efficient than gasoline vehiclesCompared with pure electric vehicles, methanol vehicles have no range anxiety and are simple to replenish energyCompared with hydrogen fuel vehicles, methanol vehicles are more convenient for storage and transportation, and have obvious cost advantages.

In the transportation field, the use of green methanol-driven vehicles represented by liquid sunlight methanol can achieve "near-zero" CO2 emissions, and in the context of the "dual carbon" goal, vehicles fueled by green methanol are expected to gradually replace fuel vehicles.

In recent years, the many advantages of methanol have begun to be recognized and developed by more and more countries, and China is also changing from a catch-up to a leader. In recent years, the whole country has set off a wave of development of methanol economy, and has laid out the research and development and production of methanol fuel. According to the China Methanol Fuel Research Report, in 2022, the production capacity of methanol products in Northwest China will account for 562%, and the methanol production capacity in East China accounted for 176%, and at the same time, the consumption power of East China ranks first in the country. From 2013 to 2018, led by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the pilot operation of methanol vehicles was organized in five provinces and cities (Shanxi, Shanghai, Shaanxi, Guizhou, and Gansu), and the applicability, safety, reliability, economy and environmental protection of methanol vehicles were systematically verified.

At present, there are not many car companies promoting methanol products in the market, and only a few companies such as Geely, Long-distance New Energy Commercial Vehicles, Yutong Bus and FAW have disclosed their product dynamics.

Among them, Geely is the car company with the deepest layout on the methanol track in China. As early as 2005, Geely began the research of methanol fuel and methanol vehicles, and has developed more than 20 methanol passenger cars and commercial vehicles in the past 17 years. At present, it has mastered the core patented technology of methanol vehicles, and has the ability of the whole chain system of R&D, manufacturing and sales of methanol vehicles. In June this year, Geely also launched the world's first methanol hybrid sedan, the fourth-generation Emgrand alcohol-electric hybrid sedan, which consumes 9 percent alcohol per 100 kilometersAbout 2 liters, which is equivalent to about 3 liters of fuel consumption per 100 kilometers of fuel vehicles, and the cost per kilometer is less than 03 yuan, the price is also very affordable - 12980,000 yuan.

At the end of 2022, Handan City, Hebei Province and Geely's Long-range New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group will work together to build a methanol economy demonstration zone, develop a regional factory for new energy commercial vehicles, a whole-industry ecosystem and a liquid sunshine methanol economy, and gradually form a comprehensive ecology of "production, supply, research and marketing" of regional methanol vehicles in Handan City. In February 2023, the world's first 100,000-ton green methanol plant, jointly invested by Geely Holding Group and Henan Shuncheng Group, was officially put into operation in Anyang, which is China's first and the world's largest carbon dioxide hydrogenation to green methanol plant. Liu Hanru, chief scientist of Yuanyuan New Energy Commercial Vehicle Group, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Geely Holding Group, and general manager of alcohol and hydrogen technology, said that Geely has nearly 30,000 methanol vehicles in large-scale operation, with a total operating mileage of nearly 10 billion kilometers. The maximum mileage of a single vehicle is more than 1.5 million kilometers. Among them, the total operating mileage of commercial vehicles is nearly 20 million kilometers, which is recognized by the market.

From the perspective of industrial development, under the goal of "double carbon", energy transformation has become the general trend. As a low-carbon, oxygen-containing fuel, methanol has the characteristics of efficient combustion, clean emission and renewable, and is a globally recognized ideal new clean and renewable energy source. Recently, the world's first large-scale green methanol purchase agreement for the shipping industry was signed, and Maersk Line will support its first batch of large-scale methanol dual-powered ships to achieve low-carbon operation. Previously, CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping and other container shipping companies have also joined the custom camp of methanol ships. This provides a favorable channel for the application of methanol as a power fuel in the field of transportation, and also provides a favorable soil for the research and development and investment of methanol technology route as a power technology.

There is no problem with the technical reserves of methanol vehicles, but the matter of where to add methanol has not been solved. Therefore, for the development of methanol vehicles, one of the next important things is the improvement of the energy supplement system.

Wei Anli, Secretary-General of the Expert Steering Committee for the Promotion and Application of Methanol Vehicles of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that the construction of methanol fuel replenishment and refueling facilities is not difficult, and it can be simply adjusted on the basis of existing gas stations, and the cost is much lower than the construction of hydrogen refueling stations. However, eight ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology jointly issued the "Guiding Opinions on the Application of Methanol Vehicles in Some Regions".In 2021, methanol vehicles will be officially included in the national unified management categoryIn September this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology made it clear that the next step would be to increase efforts to promote methanol vehiclesGuizhou, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Yunnan and other places have already begun to take action to promote. On September 17, Zhang Jianhua, director of the National Energy Administration, pointed out that in the future, new ways and new ways to replace fossil energy such as green hydrogen, methanol and ammonia energy will be actively explored.

These signals will play a positive role in methanol vehicles. At the same time, Wei Anli said that at present, almost all Chinese independent brand car companies have already set up projects to make methanol vehicles. Electric vehicles have become the mainstream development path around the world, and it is difficult for methanol vehicles to become the new mainstream in the short term. But in the long run, methanol vehicles have their own unique value, and now it just takes time to grow. When the policy and the upstream and downstream industrial chains begin to promote together, the large-scale market-oriented development of methanol vehicles is not so far away.
