Recently, the South Fork offshore wind farm in New York State, USA, has delivered its first batch of electricity to the New York State grid.
Invested and constructed by a joint venture between RSTED and Eversource, the South Fork offshore wind farm is located approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Block Island, Rhode Island, and 56 kilometers east of Montauk, New York, with an installed capacity of 132MW and plans to install 12 Siemens Gamesa 11MW offshore wind turbines.
The final investment decision was made early last yearThe offshore substation was installed in July this yearAt the end of November, the first offshore wind turbine was hoisted into place. At present, the project has completed the hoisting of two wind turbines, one of which has been put into operation, and the wind turbine is installed by Van Oord's offshore wind installation vessel "AEOLUS".
Scheduled to be fully operational in early 2024, the project will be the first utility-scale offshore wind farm to be built in U.S. federal waters and will provide enough power to approximately 70,000 homes. The renewable energy generated by the project will reduce carbon emissions by up to 6 million tonnes per year, equivalent to the emissions of 60,000 cars, the developer said.
Once operational, the South Fork wind farm will be supported by a U.S.-built crew transfer vessel (CTV) and the first offshore wind service operation vessel (SOV) in the U.S., "ECO Edison".
