What is a mini-fakra connector?

The Mini-Fakra connector is a scaled-down version of the popular Fakra connector, which is particularly important in electric vehicle applications due to its small size and light weight for automotive applications as well as personal electric vehicles (PEVs) and light electric vehicles (LEVs).

Mini Fakra: High-speed mini-FAKRA (HFM) connectors are 80% smaller than FAKRA connectors. (HFM is a registered trademark of Rosenberger). These miniature coaxial connectors are used in many automotive applications, including surround-view cameras, GPS navigation, autonomous driving, driver assistance systems, high-bandwidth infotainment, and computing models. They are available in straight or right-angle versions and are durable, lightweight, and small in size. They offer data rates of up to 28 Gbs. The Type A mini-FAKRA connector supports data transfer up to 20 Gbs.

Mouser's Rosenberger HFM high-speed FAKRA-mini connectors offer up to 80% space savings compared to traditional FAKRA connectors.

Fakra connectors have been a mainstay of automotive connectivity over the past two decadesis a version of the ultra-miniature Type B (SMB) coaxial RF connector developed by Rosenberger and standardized by the German Automotive Manufacturers Committee. FAKRA is an acronym for Fachkreis Automotive or Working Group Automobile. These versatile connectors are widely used in the global automotive industry, primarily for telematics, security, and communication applications. An average connected car contains at least 15 Fakra connectors.

The FAKRA standard defines the interface as well as the mechanical and electrical characteristics of the connector. Fakra connectors consist of plugs and jacks that are mated by a push-in mechanism embedded in a plastic housing. Audible lock confirmation lets the operator know that a connection has been established. Some variants include secondary locks. They are available in 14 different mechanical layouts. Color-coded for easy identification and to prevent mismatches. Fakra connectors operate at frequencies up to 6 GHz.

Fakra connectors are used in applications such as telematics and GPS navigation, entertainment systems, Bluetooth, cellular, keyless entry, climate control, and radio antennas throughout the car. They are also used in sensor systems for autonomous control. Other non-automotive applications include outdoor routers, industrial process control boxes, machine-to-machine modules, and IoT devices.

There are several subtypes of Fakra connectors: The original Fakra I connectors are now primarily used in antenna applications. The FAKRA II is the second generation of FAKRA and is considered the current basic standard. They are available in a variety of angles and configurations, including IP6K9K sealed and weather-resistant versions for outdoor applications. Some manufacturers offer custom and miniaturized versions.

Mini-Fakra Connector Design Notes:

StandardizationThe FAKRA standard is accepted by the world's major automakers and system vendors for automotive communication and entertainment applications. FAKRA products comply with ISO 20860-1 and 2, DIN ISO 20860, SAE USCAR 18.

ConfigurationFAKRA includes a complete range of application-based configurations with a variety of entry angles, color coding, mechanical keying, and cable name options.

DurabilityThe rugged plastic housing helps protect the FAKRA connector from the harsh conditions that vehicles face during operation, including debris, weather conditions, shock, and vibration. They are designed to handle temperatures ranging from 40°C to +105°C. A sealed version is available.

Number of mating and unplugging cyclesThese connectors are designed to handle at least 100 mating cycles.

PerformanceFakra connectors are designed to perform operating frequencies up to 6 GHz and can continuously handle 335 volt RMS.

RalliesTo meet the needs of automated assembly, FAKRA connectors are optimized for tape and reel packaging. They are also suitable for selective, wave, and reflow soldering processes.

Markets, Industries, Applications

Fakra connectors are used in telematics, security, and communication applications in the automotive industry, as well as in non-automotive vehicles such as boats, motorcycles, and off-highway heavy equipment. They are used in safety, driver assistance, V2V, and other in-vehicle networks.

Amphenol RF's FAKRA to AMC4 preconfigured assembly combines FAKRA connectors with ultra-miniature AMC4 connectors in Flex 113 mm micro coaxial cable for automotive and IoT applications where space is a design consideration.

Upcoming developments

Fakra connectors that meet ISO 20860-1 and -2 (or USCAR-17 and -18) are physically larger than connectors called Fakra-mini, such as Rosenberger's HFM. Traditional FAKRA connectors also performed poorly in RF testing. To avoid confusion, USCAR refers to the new connector as a "mini-coaxial connector".
