A few days ago, the eighth-grade students from the Fourth Affiliated High School of East China Normal University turned into future environmental scientists and walked into the comprehensive laboratory of Changfeng Campus of Putuo District Youth Education Activity Center, and followed Professor Zhu Haochen from the School of Environmental Science and Engineering of Tongji University to conduct an exploration course trip on water environment and AI innovation. Through this activity, it aims to strengthen students' understanding of water conservation and environmental friendliness, understand the application of AI technology in environmental science, cultivate innovation awareness and experimental skills, and build a systematic understanding of environmental science.
What is Environmental Science?
What are the current environmental challenges we face?
At the beginning of the course, Mr. Zhu introduced in detail the environmental challenges currently faced by human beings, including the impact of population growth on the environment, the distribution and pollution of water resources, carbon emissions and the greenhouse effect, and the challenge of microplastics. As a comprehensive discipline, environmental science includes mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, geography, etc. Through the introduction of these contents, students will be able to have a basic understanding of environmental science.
Introduce environmental challenges.
Application of AI innovation in environmental science
With the maturity of AI technology, the application of AI in environmental science has become possible, and it has also become an important technological innovation. Through machine Xi, image recognition, data analysis and other means, environmental monitoring, pollution control and resource utilization are effectively optimized. For example, in the field of intelligent transportation, the control of traffic lights can play a role in reducing the emission of automobile exhaust. Another example is the use of AI technology to analyze large amounts of data in water samples to monitor water quality in real time, accurately identify pollutant types and concentrations, and help respond quickly to pollution incidents. In addition to these two examples, Mr. Zhu also shared a number of AI innovation cases with the students.

Water resource sampling
Sampling. The Changfeng Campus, which has abundant water resources, can provide students with the convenience of obtaining water samples. The students all actively recommended themselves, and finally the four students went to the outdoor group to complete the sample collection task. From the suspension rope to the river to fetch water, to the soil, the four students cooperated with each other and successfully completed the task.
Purification treatment experiments
Next, the six groups of students will simulate the "coagulation", "sedimentation" and "filtration" processes of water purification treatment based on the collected samples.
Step 1: Preparation of experimental equipment and reagents:
1.Preparation of flocculant polyaluminum chloride solution: the concentration of the solution is 1-5%, that is, one cubic of clear water, and 10-50kg of agent is added to dissolve.
Tips: Flocculant polyaluminium chloride (PAC) is a new type of polymer inorganic polymer, which is formed by polymerization of aluminum ions and chloride ions in water. PAC has efficient coagulation, flocculation, clarification, purification, decolorization and other functions, and is widely used in sewage treatment, urban water supply, chemical materials, textiles, food, pharmaceuticals and many other fields.
2.Filtration equipment: Filter paper, funnels, beakers, and glass rods are essential materials for the laboratory and are essential throughout the simulation.
3.Protective equipment: Wearing good goggles and gloves is a basic requirement for conducting experiments, and students need to develop good experimental Xi.
Experimental.
Step 2: Separate impurities from the water
This step is crucial for the whole experiment, and students need to use flocculants to complete the process of coagulation-flocculation-precipitation. The amount of flocculant and the subtle manipulation in the process determine whether the sedimentation of debris in the water can be effectively completed.
Experimental. After the reagents have been inserted and stirred sufficiently, the precipitation process is a long waiting process. But sometimes it doesn't go so well, sometimes the dosage is too much, sometimes it doesn't stir enough, and sometimes it takes too long.
But eventually, a miracle happened!
Wait for precipitation. Step 3: Filtering
There's one last step to complete the whole experiment! The students diverted the water through the glass rod to the qualitative filter paper, and the impurities could be filtered out through the qualitative filter paper. Finally, it's done!
The test was completed, and the students had a question: Can this water be drunk? The answer is not yet, if you want to change the ** class of drinking water, there are still many processes to be completed. So what are the specific processes?Students may wish to search for information to find the answer by themselves.
Through this course, the students not only learned about the concept of environmental protection and scientific and technological innovation, but also felt the mystery of water treatment technology through practical operation. It is expected that students will be able to further understand and learn Xi knowledge of environmental science in the future, and make their own contributions to the environmental protection of the motherland.
