Demand from European customers drove second-hand shopping on Amazon to €1 billion. This trend is likely to continue as shoppers seek to save money and make more sustainable choices.

Amazon shared data on the growth of second-hand sales on its Europe** for the first time this week. The company did this when it opened a temporary store in London full of second-hand items.

John Boumphrey, Amazon's UK country manager, explained that in Saudi Arabia alone, the retail giant sold more than 4 million used or refurbished products at discounted prices in 2022. In the first nine months of this year, Amazon's second-hand sales in the UK increased by more than 15% compared to the same period last year.

"Amazon is committed to giving more products a second chance – whether it's by helping customers buy second-hand products, or through programs**, trade-ins and repair products, contributing to the circular economy," the UK boss said.

Elsewhere, Amazon's second-hand sales in Europe are also growing, thanks to consumer financial and environmental awareness.

This week, Amazon launched an in-person "second chance store" in London. In this first-of-its-kind UK brick-and-mortar store, shoppers can find over 4,000 quality returned, refurbished and unboxed items. The company says customers can shop more seriously while saving up to 50% compared to the MSRP.

Amazon has launched a physical "second chance store."

The temporary shop in London also has a repair area and is operated by GXO ServiceTech, a long-standing partner of the UK's leading market. Customers can attend a free repair workshop with an in-store expert to learn Xi repair damaged laptops and home technology through live demonstrations.
