Foreword

By building an intelligent and controllable wireless environment, smart metasurfaces will bring a new network paradigm to the future of 6G. As a new NE and basic enabling technology, intelligent metasurfaces will fully empower 6G networks and meet the huge demand for future mobile communications. The characteristics of low cost, low power consumption, and simple and easy deployment of intelligent metasurfaces have made them a research hotspot that has attracted much attention in international competition, and the unremitting research on intelligent metasurface technology will become a must for wireless communication in the future.

In June 2020, the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group established the "Intelligent Metasurface Task Force", marking the real beginning of intelligent metasurface research from academia to industry. On September 17, 2021 and November 17, 2022, the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group released the "Research Report on Intelligent Metasurface Technology" (first edition) and "Research Report on Intelligent Metasurface Technology (second edition)", respectively. Compared with the previous two editions of the report, this research report has been comprehensively updated, showing the latest progress of intelligent metasurfaces in theory and engineering application technology from multiple dimensions such as application scenarios, key technologies, and standard work. Considering the engineering practice, the second chapter focuses on four intelligent metasurface application scenarios: enhancing low-frequency coverage and capacity, enabling medium-high frequency continuous coverage, enabling ubiquitous near-field, and enabling ubiquitous perception and positioning, and focuses on the first-value application of intelligent metasurface technology and live network integration: Chapter 3 comprehensively reviews the latest progress in the basic theory and key technologies of intelligent metasurfaces, and adds near-field radiation theories and systems based on intelligent metasurfaces** Two parts: Chapter 4 is a new chapter, which comprehensively sorts out the problems faced in the engineering of intelligent metasurfaces and their impact on standardization, explores the practical application path of intelligent metasurfaces, and prepares for the commercial use of intelligent metasurfaces in the future.

This report is prepared by many experts from the Intelligent Metasurface Task Force of the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group, thanks to the hard work of experts from all member units, and thanks to Academician Cui Tiejun, Professor Jin Shi of Southeast University and other senior experts for their guidance.

Chapter 1 Overview

5G networks have been in commercial use for four years and have become an important part of the new infrastructure. By the end of October 2023, China has built about 321 5G base stations50,000, 5G industry applications have also been integrated into 60 major categories of the national economy, becoming an "accelerator" to promote the digital transformation and upgrading of the real economy. As user needs continue to evolve, better service experiences and more vertical industry business expansion will drive the continuous development of mobile communication networks. In the future, 6G will take social well-being as an important direction of 6G development while meeting the personalized needs of users, and realize the connection between the physical world and the virtual world through multi-dimensional ubiquitous connection of human-machine-things and inclusive intelligence, thereby promoting the evolution of human society from "Internet of Everything" to "Internet of Everything", forming a truly intelligent Internet era.
