Architectural Theory and Research Methods:
Supported by lectures and student-led seminars, this module will introduce you to a variety of current research in architecture and related fields and discuss their relevance to design and today's architectural thinking.
Students will examine key issues, including the impact of history and theory on the spatial, social, cultural, and technological aspects of architecture;Urban Design Theory, Past and Present Cities, and the Influence of Fine Arts;The epistemological and philosophical trajectories that underpin architectural research;and the role of humanities and technology.
By considering relevant methods, conducting literature reviews, and establishing research questions, you will develop and expand your methods of analysis and interpretation in architectural thinking design.
Building Technology & Construction Methods:
Xi in the first year of the course, this module will provide you with a broad knowledge of the technical and structural aspects of architectural practice and thinking. It addresses issues of construction, technology, environmental science, materials, components, and systems, as well as environmental strategy and impact for specification selection and procurement.
Students will learn about innovations and emerging technologies in architecture, and their relevance to design and thinking. Issues related to innovative structures and structural forms, building energy use, and sustainable and low-carbon building procurement and appropriate materials will be considered.
Where possible, you'll visit live projects and sites to gain first-hand experience of the issues involved.
Management, Practice, and Law:
This module addresses professional issues relevant to the building and construction industry, including the role of the architect in procurement, building production and compliance with legislation processes.
The aim of this module is to enhance the student's experience through the student's Part 1 qualification and time in industry.
Students will explore issues such as ethics, health and safety, codes of conduct, legal rights and responsibilities, and examine areas of business strategy, marketing, and practice. You'll also consider legal liability, including briefings, contracts, negotiations, time and expense management, procurement options, warranties, and post-occupancy assessments.

Nottingham Trent University's undergraduate architecture major can be articulated through the undergraduate preparatory department, especially suitable for domestic high school students, who complete the second or third year of high school, and need to provide a portfolio or 500 words PS to show their interest in the field of architecture when applying. In addition to architecture, the International Foundation Year also includes Building Surveying, Building Technology, Interior Architecture and Design.
