A strong cold wave has ravaged the capital. The minimum temperature in Beijing fell to -12 this morning, falling below -10 for the first time in the second half of the year, and it will continue to "bottom" -16 tonight. This low temperature will also be the peak of this cold wave process.
In response to the current round of cold wave and continuous low temperature weather, the Municipal Meteorological Observatory has successively issued a blue warning for cold wave and a yellow warning for continuous low temperature. So, what's the difference between these two warnings? Why is it necessary to issue a continuous low temperature warning after the cold wave warning has been issued?
Yin Zhiyin, a senior engineer at the Beijing Meteorological Service Center, explained that the meaning of the two warnings is not the same, and the cold wave warning refers to the rapid drop in temperature, especially the minimum temperature within 24 hours8 before the cold wave blue warning can be issued. The continuous low temperature warning means that the temperature during this period is running at a low level, which can be regarded as a supplement to the cold wave warning.
In other words, when strong cold air comes, after the temperature has dropped to such a low point, there is still a steady stream of cold air to maintain this temperature at such a low point. In such a situation, it is necessary to issue a cold wave warning and a continuous low temperature warning at the same time, because the two complement each other and eventually bring us the midwinter weather that has both a significant cooling and will continue to cool for a long time.
