The Zhaojiagou East Pump Gate, the largest single pump gate project planned to be built in Pudong New Area, is located at the mouth of the Yangtze River in the east of Caolu Town, Pudong New Area, and the discharge volume of the pump gate can reach the entire West Lake within two days after the pump gate is opened. The project has been completed at the end of this year and will be officially put into use during the flood season next year.

Tian Liyong, chief engineer of Huajian Group Shanghai Water Conservancy Engineering Design and Research Institute, is the person in charge of the design of the project, he said, according to the particularity of the geographical location of the project - the plot is located in the middle of the inland port basin and the wharf, and the overall layout plan of "the pumping station is in the center and the gate is placed on both sides". Based on this scheme, all power supply and distribution equipment is placed on the gate to form an integrated design of the facilities on the gate. It not only solves the impact of the operation of the entire pump gate hub on the inner and outer rivers, port basins and wharves, but also solves some problems of remote power supply difficulties in the management area.
Two sluices can be diverted and discharged, and the water of the Yangtze River with two tides a day can be diverted through two sluices to replenish the water resources needed by the entire northeastern part of Pudong. Tian Liyong said that if Pudong suffers from heavy rainfall, the rainwater will not have time to drain, and the pumping station can be forced into the Yangtze River estuary to achieve the safety of waterlogging in the region. Each of the four pumps has a flow rate of 225 cubic meters per second, the total flow rate is 90 cubic meters per second. If this pumping station is fully operational, it can basically drain the West Lake water in two days.
The main structure and building are special-shaped structures
For the first time, a large-scale water conservancy project was integrated into the concept of urban cultural landscape
In order to meet the requirements of the project as a landscape project, the shape and structure of the gate pile building are changeable, and the structural form of section and special-shaped is adopted. There are a total of 92 Y-shaped reinforced concrete structural columns on the gate, each with a different cross-section and size.

Tian Liyong said that the Zhaojiagou East Pump Gate Plant Station has adopted an open layout, and it is also hoped that the public can learn more about the infrastructure of water conservancy, so that everyone can participate more in learning relevant knowledge and improve the social participation of modern water conservancy.
Wang Biao, manager of the water conservancy project management department of Shanghai Pudong Engineering Construction Management of Shanghai Pudong Development Group, revealed that the project officially started on July 18, 2020, and the project contract was completed on November 28, 2023, ensuring that it will be officially put into use before the flood season in 2024.
