At 10 o'clock in the morning of January 29th, with the late Shang Dynasty ** mask and vertical hair bronze statue carefully unboxed and arranged by the staff, bringing together 363 cultural relics from 28 cultural and archaeological institutions across the country, all in place, waiting to meet the audience at the "Star China - Sanxingdui Jinsha Ancient Shu Civilization Exhibition" that opened on February 2.

As the opening exhibition of the East Hall of the Shanghai Museum, this exhibition brings together the latest archaeological discoveries and the latest cultural relics restoration results, and is the largest and highest lineup of archaeological relics unearthed from the ancient Shu civilization outside Sichuan Province so far. The exhibition makes use of the space of about 2,000 square meters in the two temporary exhibition halls on the first and second floors of the East Building, and is divided into three themes: "Tianxing Trunk Road", "Terrain and Kunwu" and "People and Mingde", to comprehensively reveal the appearance, connotation and characteristics of the ancient Shu civilization to the public, and present the pluralistic, integrated and open and inclusive characteristics of the development of Chinese civilization.

Sanxingdui and Jinsha are the hottest new archaeological discoveries in China in recent years, coupled with the opening of the East Pavilion, everyone's expectations are very high, so we must present a heavyweight exhibition at the Shanghai Museum. Chu Xiaobo, director of the Shanghai Museum, told reporters that during the three days from January 27 to 29, 8,000 visitors per day were sold out within five minutes, which is enough to show the expectations of the audience.

As one of the key exhibits of this exhibition, the bronze figure with vertical hair has attracted attention. This artifact from the late Shang Dynasty was unearthed in 2021 in the No. 8 sacrificial pit at the Sanxingdui site in Guanghan, Sichuan, with thick eyebrows and big eyes, a high nose bridge, and bent knees, in a semi-squatting shape. The slightly cocked hips and thick leg muscles make this bronze man look quite muscular.

Hu Jialin, a research librarian of the Bronze Research Department of the Shanghai Museum, told reporters that unlike the more mature and abstract bronze art in the Central Plains at that time, the Yangtze River basin in the late Shang Dynasty had relatively realistic artistic characteristics.

Echoing the Sanxingdui Jinsha Ancient Shu Civilization Exhibition, the "Ancient Chinese Bronze Museum" opened in the East Hall of the Shanghai Museum will present the audience with the most complete display of ancient Chinese bronzes at home and abroad. The exhibition hall takes the development history of Chinese bronze craft as a clue, and is divided into seven sections: germination period, incubation period, heyday, transformation period, renewal period, fusion period and retro period, and the exhibits fully express the characteristics of bronze craftsmanship in different periods. The latest display features a selection of more than 500 exhibits, reflecting the 3,600 years from the late summer of the 18th century BC to the mid-Qing dynasty of the 19th century AD, during which ancient Chinese bronzes occurred, developed and evolved.

At the same time, after three years of planning, the global tour exhibition "Encounter Sanxingdui - 12K Macro Look at National Treasures" filmed in two years will also be unveiled on the third floor of the East Pavilion of Shanghai Expo. Through the three parts of "Touching Dreams", "Encounters" and "Smart", the exhibition displays 12K ultra-high-definition digital images of cultural relics, Sanxingdui archaeological excavation process and contemporary art works with the theme of Sanxingdui created by domestic and foreign artists.

After the opening of the East Building of the Shanghai Museum, it will be positioned as a display window of Chinese civilization; The People's Square Pavilion of the Shanghai Museum focuses more on exchanges and mutual learning among world civilizations. Chu Xiaobo said, "One is the window of Chinese art, and the other is the window of world civilization, and I hope that the audience can feel the interplay of international style and oriental charm during the visit." ”
