Qualcomm has just unveiled the Snapdragon X2024 modem at MWC 80. It claims to be the world's most advanced 5G modem system, leveraging integrated intelligence to enable the next generation of 5G.
Will the Snapdragon X80 be available in future iPhones? Apple reportedly continues to use Qualcomm-branded modems in all of its latest smartphones, despite years of working on developing its own modems.
For example, the iPhone 15 uses the Snapdragon X70, and the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to use the updated Snapdragon X75. Logically, the iPhone 17 Pro will be upgraded to the Snapdragon X80.
What upgrades does the Snapdragon X80 bring? The seventh-generation 5G modem integrates a dedicated 5G AI processor and a 5G-Advanced-ready architecture to help it achieve several world-first milestones.
It is the first 5G modem with fully integrated satellite communications support that promises improved data speed, latency, quality of service, coverage, positioning accuracy, spectral efficiency, power efficiency, and multi-antenna management.
Qualcomm claims that the Snapdragon X80-powered consumer device will be launched in the second half of 2024, however, Apple devices won't see it until 2025.
But what about Apple's own modem? Although Apple has reportedly been working on this issue since 2018, there is no guarantee that it will materialize. It's also worth noting that Apple has extended its 5G modem agreement with Qualcomm until 2026.
In addition to the modem, the iPhone 17 will also be an exciting update for Apple, with rumors suggesting that it will ditch the Dynamic Island in favor of a more full-screen, bezel-less design.
