UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- On the occasion of the second anniversary of the escalation of the Ukraine crisis, the United Nations Security Council held a high-level public meeting on Ukraine on the 23rd, at which many parties called for a political solution to the Ukraine crisis.

On the same day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for peace on the basis of the UN Charter, international law and relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly.

Guterres warned that the danger of an escalation and expansion of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is real. The Ukraine crisis has deepened geopolitical divisions, exacerbated regional instability, and squeezed the space to respond to other global imperatives. The Ukraine crisis could also lead to a nuclear accident, which is worrying. Guterres stressed that the way to achieve peace and security in Ukraine lies in respect for the UN Charter and international law.

Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said at the meeting that the Ukraine crisis has dragged on so far, showing a trend of prolongation, complexity and expansion. The fact that this avoidable tragedy has developed to the point where it is today is deplorable and deserves deep reflection. The international community should work together to actively seek a just and reasonable solution to promote a political solution to the crisis and bring peace to life at an early date.

Representatives of Switzerland, Mozambique and Sierra Leone also called for peace through political and diplomatic means. (ENDS).
