Fudan University published an obituary on its official website.

He is a famous mathematician and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Hu Hesheng died of illness

He was 96 years old

Previously she was called.

"The first female academician in the field of mathematics in China"

Hu Hesheng, female, from Nanjing, Jiangsu, was born in June 1928 in Shanghai into an artistic family. His grandfather, Hu Yanqing, was a Chinese painter; His father, Hu Boxiang, was a painter, photographer and industrialist, and served as the chairman of the Shanghai Cosmetics Industry Association.

From 1939 to 1945, Hu Hesheng studied at Shanghai Qingxin Girls' High School (now Shanghai No. 8 Middle School);

From 1945 to 1950, he studied in the Department of Mathematics of Jiaotong University and the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Daxia University.

In 1952, he graduated from the Department of Mathematics of Zhejiang University and worked as an intern researcher and assistant researcher at the Institute of Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Since 1956, he has worked at Fudan University.

He was promoted to professor in 1980.

In 1981, he became one of the first batch of doctoral supervisors in Fudan University.

In 1991, he was elected as a member (academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In 2003, he was elected as an academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences (now the Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries), and also served as an associate editor of Acta Mathematica Sinica.

He studied under Professor Su Buqing.

He has been engaged in the research of differential geometry for a long time.

When Hu Hesheng was in the fifth grade of primary school, the Japanese army occupied Nanjing, and his grandfather's collection of calligraphy, paintings, and antiques was looted. Hu Hesheng moved to Shanghai with his father's family. When she graduated from university, she gave up the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant at Tongji University in the hope of continuing her studies. This year, she received admission notices from Peking University and Zhejiang University at the same time. At that time,Professor Su Buqing, the founder of Chinese differential geometry, teaches at Zhejiang University, so she chose Zhejiang University.

Hu Hesheng's husband is Gu Chaohao, a famous mathematician in China and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (passed away in 2012), and the two met at Zhejiang University. Gu Chaohao was admitted to the Department of Mathematics of Zhejiang University in 1943. In 1948, Professor Su Buqing left Gu Chaohao as a teaching assistant, and two years later, Hu Hesheng, who also loved mathematics, became Su Buqing's graduate student.

Hu Hesheng also stayed in school to work after graduating from graduate school, and in 1952, when the college departments were adjusted, she and Gu Chaohao both followed Su Buqing to Fudan University. The seeds of love planted in Zhejiang University blossomed and bore fruit in Fudan, and they tied the knot and became the "fairy couple" of Shuyuan, which everyone admired.

The first female academician in the field of mathematics in ChinaIn 1991, Hu Hesheng was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, becoming the first female academician in the field of mathematics in China. Su Buqing spoke highly of it in his recommendation speech: "I have long relied on her to preside over the ......differential geometry direction of my effective forceShe's my ** person. ”

When Hu Hesheng was elected as an academician, Gu Chaohao wrote a poem to congratulate: "Study hard at night in the cold window, before dawn." Geometry is true, and physics is a new chapter. The red makeup does not need to be ignored, and the color is naturally researched. The academy has a name, and you can taste the sunny day together. ”

According to the Zhejiang University Daily, at the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians, Hu Hesheng was invited to give a one-hour lecture at the conference, which was established in 1994, and only every four years invited a world-renowned female mathematician to give a one-hour report at the International Congress of Mathematicians, and only female mathematicians who have made significant creative achievements in mathematics can receive this honor.

Academician Hu Hesheng has devoted his life to education and scientific research, and has made outstanding contributions to teaching and educating people, scientific research, discipline construction, and international exchanges. Her tireless and tenacious academic spirit will continue to inspire generations of young students to reach new heights in mathematics.
