When discussing the cost of living for college students, parents expressed their opinions and had different opinions. Let's start with the topic from the perspective of a senior college teacher.
Not long ago, I wrote an article on the topic of how much to give my children. After the article was published, many parents shared their views in the comment section. They are divided on the cost of living. Today, I'm going to use some practical examples from parents to dissect the cost of living for college students.
Some parents believe that their children's living expenses in college should be controlled at about 1,200 yuan. They firmly believe that raising children in poverty is good for their growth, otherwise it will hurt them. This view is supported by many.
However, there are also some parents who disagree. They believe that if the family conditions allow, they should give their children more pocket money so that they can live a decent life. Some parents are worried that if they give too little, their children will feel inferior; Giving too much, and afraid that the child will spend money lavishly.
As a university teacher, I often go deep into the lives of students to understand their daily expenses. In my observation in the cafeteria, for example, breakfast usually costs about 8 yuan, and lunch and dinner are about 12 yuan. In this way, the monthly food and beverage cost is about 960 yuan.
Based on this calculation, 1,000 yuan of living expenses can only make the child barely maintain a basic life. As for other expenses such as socializing, learning materials, and shopping, they cannot be satisfied.
Therefore, I do not recommend that parents only give their children 1000 yuan. For ordinary families, a monthly living allowance of 1,500 yuan is more appropriate. In this way, the child will not only be able to meet the basic needs of life, but also have a certain balance for social activities.
Of course, if the family conditions are better, it can be appropriately increased according to the actual situation. 2,000 yuan, 2,500 yuan or even 3,000 yuan are all things to consider. The key is to combine the family conditions, the consumption level of the child's city, and the child's personality. After all, this is your child, and giving a few hundred dollars more won't make them bad. According to my observation, most of today's college students know how to save money and do not spend money indiscriminately.
Of course, if you give too little, your child may appear too reserved socially. But if the child is addicted to game top-up or star chasing, then the problem lies with the child himself, and it will not help to give more or less. If the child has no bottom line in this regard, even if you don't give them money, they may be able to meet their needs through online loans and other means. Therefore, parents also need to communicate more with their children to understand their real thoughts.
In conclusion, when determining the cost of living for college students, parents need to consider a variety of factors, not only to ensure their children's quality of life, but also to cultivate their financial awareness. Through reasonable guidance and communication, we can help children spend a fulfilling and happy college time.
