Moving out of the big round table that had been silent for four years, Xiamen University yesterday set up 165 tables for the Chinese New Year's Eve dinner, and invited students who did not go home for the New Year to gather around the fireplace for free.

Xu Jingong, deputy secretary of the party committee of Xiamen University, said that in the 30th year of the Chinese New Year's Eve, it is a tradition of Xiamen University to hold a Chinese New Year's Eve dinner for teachers and students who have not returned home for the New Year.

This "custom" has existed since the eighties of the twentieth century, initially organized by each department itself, and in 1995, the school began to gather all teachers and students who stayed in the school to gather together for the fireplace on Chinese New Year's Eve. In addition, the cafeteria will specially replace the square table with a round table that symbolizes reunion, and not only that, but the school and department leaders must be around the fireplace with the students.

Xu Jingong said that during this year's winter vacation, 2,515 students from Xiamen University stayed on campus for the whole time, and 83 percent of the students stayed on campus for study, scientific research and exam preparation. Another large number are foreign students, and one student from Peru said that she had heard about China's Chinese New Year's Eve dinner for a long time, and she couldn't wait.

Yesterday at 16 o'clock, the Chinese New Year's Eve dinner began. This year, Xiamen University has returned to the traditional form of table gathering, with a total of 165 tables set up at the Siming, Xiang'an and Zhangzhou campuses of Xiamen University. In the past four years, due to the impact of the epidemic, the Chinese New Year's Eve meal at the big round table has been changed to a divided meal system.

This year, the 14-course Chinese New Year's Eve meal was also resumed, including gentian fish, shrimp, crab, etc., as well as dumplings and eight-treasure taro puree, to meet the needs of different students.

Zhu Xianzhi from Taiwan is a master's student in civil and commercial law at Xiamen ** College, and this winter vacation, he has to graduate in a hurry and prepare for the lawyer qualification exam, so he did not return to Taiwan. Zhu Xianzhi's teachers invited him to his home for the New Year, but he wanted to experience the school's Chinese New Year's Eve dinner, so he politely declined the teachers' invitation.

Zhu Xianzhi, whose ancestral home is Hunan, said that Taiwan also has a hearth, and the first dish of their Chinese New Year's Eve meal is steamed with cured flavor. He fell into an intoxicated memory: I really love to eat Hunan food.

In addition, as in previous years, from the first day of the first lunar month to the third day of the junior high school, Xiamen college students who stay on campus can eat for free for three days, and the school pays for it.
