This story takes place in the state of Qin during the Warring States period. At that time, Shang Ying came up with a way to promote reform and establish his own prestige. He erected a three-zhang long log outside the south gate of the capital, and made a public promise that if anyone could carry the log to the north gate, he would be rewarded with ten taels.
However, since this task seemed like a no-brainer, the onlookers did not believe that such a simple thing could be rewarded so highly, so no one was willing to try it. As a result, Shang Ying raised the bounty to fifty gold. Finally, someone stepped forward and was willing to try, and he carried the log to the north gate. Shang Ying immediately fulfilled his promise and rewarded the man with fifty gold.
This move allowed Shang Ying to establish an image of integrity in the hearts of the people, and also enabled his reform to be successfully promoted in the Qin State. Through this story, Shang Yang demonstrated his determination and integrity to the people, laying a solid foundation for the implementation of the new law. Eventually, these new laws made the Qin state grow stronger, eventually unifying China.
This story also teaches us that integrity is the foundation for building trust and success. Only by doing what we say and keeping our promises can we win the trust and respect of others.
