If you want to say what is the connection between Lu Xun and West Lake, the first thing you think of is the two well-known articles: "On the Fall of Leifeng Tower" and "On the Fall of Leifeng Tower", which do not seem to be too wonderful connections.

Lu Xun's attitude towards West Lake: start with criticism

In those two articles, Lu Xun had a profound criticism of the boring "Ten Scenery Disease" represented by the Ten Views of the West Lake, and also had this description of the Leifeng Sunset: "But I have seen the Leifeng Pagoda that has not fallen, tattered and hidden between the lakes and mountains, and the setting sun shines on these close places, which is the 'Leifeng Sunset', one of the ten views of the West Lake." I have also seen the real scene of 'Leifeng Sunset', and it is not good, I think. ”

Many people use these two articles to prove that Lu Xun doesn't like West Lake, but I don't agree with it.

He not only criticized the "Ten Scene Disease", but also criticized the Chinese people for "ignorance, suspiciousness, individualism, schadenfreude, pedantic compromise, cold-bloodedness, etc.", criticized the way of Confucius and Mencius, saying that "Confucius is the 'saint of the powerful'" and "Confucius's 'benevolence, righteousness and morality' is a soft knife for killing" and so on, but obviously, he is not criticizing the hard-working and kind people, nor is it the real way of Confucius and Mencius, but criticizing the old society, the old etiquette, the old system and the rulers, etc.

In the same way, he is not criticizing the fault of "Jing", the scenery is silent, what fault can there be? What he really criticized was the feudal dross, the powerful who maintained the feudal patriarchal system, the feudal system that blocked the development of society, and the numb people who were conservative, content with the status quo, and afraid of change. It is not difficult to see that Lu Xun has no likes or dislikes for West Lake, and he just uses the topic to play.

Lu Xun's first impression of Hangzhou: visiting his grandfather in prison.

Tracing Lu Xun's footprints in Hangzhou, the earliest can be traced back to 1898 (the 24th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty), because his grandfather Zhou Fuqing was involved in the bribery case of the science field, was imprisoned in Huapailou Hangzhou Prison, 17-year-old Lu Xun came to the provincial capital Hangzhou for the first time to visit his grandfather with his second brother Zhou Zuoren, who had lived in Hangzhou before. Later, he went to Nanjing Sailor School to study, and every time he came and went through Hangzhou, he visited his grandfather. Relatives are in prison, and no one will like this sad place.

Lu Xun's life in Hangzhou: teaching in the school.

There was a clear connection between Lu Xun and West Lake, which took place from 1909 to 1910. At that time, after returning from Japan, Lu Xun taught at the Zhejiang Two-level Normal School (now Hangzhou Senior High School) in Hangzhou, serving as a teacher of physiology and chemistry, and also serving as a botanical translator for the Japanese teacher Suzuki Kotoshi.

During this period, Lu Xun devoted a lot of effort to teaching, and rarely went out to play. According to the record of Xu Shoushang, a fellow villager and colleague, "Lu Xun rarely visited, and in a year in Hangzhou, he only visited the lake once, and he went there at my invitation."

Although he only visited the lake once, Lu Xun often collected plant specimens in the mountains around the West Lake because of his work. According to Lu Xun's plant collection record written in March 1910, the locations he collected involved inside and outside Qiantang Gate, Geling, Qixialing, Gushan, Lingyin, Yuhuang Mountain and other places. Wu Zhigang, a student, once wrote an article recalling that his teacher Lu Xun once took them to climb Baochu Mountain (i.e., Baobao Mountain), along the ridge to the south, through Geling, Chutai to Qixialing. Then go down the hill from Pinglu and turn past Gushan Mountain, and return to the school along the white causeway. Lu Xun's footprints have traveled all over the West Lake.

Lu Xun's visit in Hangzhou: a honeymoon trip.

In August 1910, Lu Xun left Hangzhou and went to his hometown of Shaoxing to teach. After that, he traveled to Beijing, Xiamen and other places, and finally settled in Shanghai with his wife Xu Guangping in 1927, during which Lu Xun ushered in another and last trip to Hangzhou in his life at the invitation of Xu Qinwen and Kawashima.

He took his wife Xu Guangping to Hangzhou to play, they went to the Xixi wetland to see the plum blossoms, to the tiger run to drink tea, to eat outside the building, because Hangzhou is particularly hot, Lu Xun is still sick. But they also had a good time.

After that, Lu Xun never set foot in Hangzhou again.

In "The Complete Works of Lu Xun", there are almost no articles such as travelogues, from Tokyo to Beijing, Xiamen, Shanghai, Lu Xun traveled all over the world, but he rarely traveled, and this time in Hangzhou was also one of his rare trips.

Statue of Lu Xun: Facing the lake and the mountain.

Although Hangzhou is only a place where Lu Xun once passed, neither a place where he grew up, nor a place where his soul returned, Hangzhou has always remembered this great man - his figure once traveled through the lakes and mountains, and his spirit once nourished this land.

Some are gone, but they will always be remembered; Some objects, which record history, also leave a red imprint. Along the Gushan Road behind the West Lake Scenic Area, you can soon see a seated statue of a person facing east and staring into the distance with a grim expression on the Yinyin lawn along the lake, which is Mr. Lu Xun.

This statue was erected in July 1981 on the occasion of the centenary of Mr. Lu Xun's birth.

He leans against the mountain and sits on the West Lake, when the spring flowers are blooming, here is the best place to enjoy spring in the south of the Yangtze River, the thriving scenery by the embankment, and the smiling tourists by the lake.

He had seen the "fall of Leifeng Tower" here, and now he has also seen "the rise of Leifeng Tower".
