In order to strengthen the governance of the water environment, in September 2021, the city built the artificial wetland at the north entrance of the Wanpingkou Lagoon, and the project adopts the combined process of "magnetic flocculation pretreatment + underflow wetland + surface flow wetland + river corridor wetland", and uses the wetland system to deeply degrade and purify the overflow sewage from the three interception weirs in the flood discharge ditch, the drainage outside the Luzhou Road sewage treatment plant and the upstream polluted river water, so as to truly make the sewage clear. In December 2023, Wanpingkou Lagoon Lake North Inlet Constructed Wetland became the only urban construction project in the province to be selected for the 2023 Chinese Habitat Environment Award (example).

In 2022, the constructed wetland in the Guhe River Basin was successfully selected as a typical case of the province's implementation of the national strategy of the Yellow River.
Nowadays, the Guhe River basin has clearer water and more beautiful environment, and more than 10 species of wild protected birds such as water ducks, egrets, white cranes, and pond herons have been found in the wetland, which is like an ecological picture of an artificial wetland. It is understood that the constructed wetland is a project that simulates the structure and function of natural wetlands, artificially dispenses low-pollution water into a unique ecosystem composed of filler (including soil) and aquatic plants, animals and microorganisms, and improves water quality through the synergistic effects of physics, chemistry and biology.
Compared with traditional sewage treatment technology, constructed wetland has the characteristics of low infrastructure cost, low operating cost, good treatment effect, and ecological restoration function to create ecological landscape. Mu Shanfeng, chief of the drainage service section of the Municipal Urban Administration, introduced that the city focuses on the goal of building a "wetland + sewage treatment plant" water purification complex, relying on natural spaces such as river beaches, lakes, and estuaries, and has laid out artificial wetlands in important mainstreams and tributaries, and important point source outlets. "After the completion of the constructed wetland, it has obvious effects on improving the water quality of rivers and lakes and supplementing the ecological water volume of rivers and lakes. Through the real-time monitoring of river water quality sensing equipment, the discharge water of the second sewage treatment plant has been stably reached from the first-class A effluent standard to the fourth-class surface water. The constructed wetland not only constructs the ecological belt along the river, improves the environmental carrying capacity of the basin, promotes the recycling of reclaimed water in the basin, but also carries the functions of flood control and landscape, and maximizes the comprehensive efficiency of the wetland. Today, the constructed wetland at the mouth of the lagoon has been rated as a popular science education base, and has become a check-in place for citizens, attracting more than 100,000 people to visit every year.
In order to promote the overall layout of the Guhe River Basin, give full play to the synergy of upstream and downstream wetlands, and comprehensively improve the overall water environment of the river, in 2023, the Municipal Urban Management Bureau will also cooperate with natural resources and planning, ecological environment, water conservancy and other departments to make use of natural spaces such as banks, ditches, lakes, and estuaries, and carry out comprehensive planning for the construction of artificial wetlands in water bodies such as the Guhe River Basin in the urban area, and incorporate them into the detailed planning of urban control and special plans for urban flood control and drainage, and a total of 15 urban artificial wetlands with a total area of 4,500 mu are currently planned.
