Jinan shadow puppetry is an important branch of Shandong shadow puppetry, in 2008 has been a national intangible cultural heritage representative project, although Jinan shadow puppetry at that time was only more than 80 years old, but its performance form and artistic style have a wide influence, with a unique art history and regional culture research value.
More than 100 years ago, Li Keao brought Jinan shadow puppetry, and now Jinan shadow puppetry has been passed down to the fifth generation, and the first "female head" has appeared, she is Li Juan.
In the past, in the family tradition of shadow puppetry, the heir could only be passed on to the male rather than the female, but after the 80s, women have played an increasingly important role in shadow puppetry, which cannot be ignored. Li Juan, who was born in a shadow puppet family, has been learning art with her grandfather Li Xingshi since she was a child, and her grandfather is strict with her, and will assign her a lot of tasks every day.
In the past, Jinan shadow puppetry was also called "two people busy", one of them was responsible for all the performance forms, and the other person only served as the gong and drum accompaniment. After years of accumulation, Li Xingshi has created his own performance form of one person and one play, pedaling gongs and drums, operating shadow puppets with both hands, and speaking and singing in his mouth. Li Juan also inherited this form of performance, and at the age of 15, she was able to independently perform the shadow puppet show "Lotus Fairy" and manipulate more than 20 kinds of props by herself.
Li Juan said that she never thought that she would make shadow puppetry her lifelong career, and her original dream was to start a children's English preschool institution. But at that time, Jinan shadow puppetry was being rated as a national intangible cultural heritage project, and it was when the inheritor was needed, Li Juan resolutely decided to give up her dream and help her grandfather inherit the shadow puppet full-time. "I feel like I should do it, it's my responsibility as an inheritor. It is this responsibility that makes Li Juan regard Jinan shadow puppetry as her life's work.
Once when she was performing outside, Li Juan met an old man, who looked at her stage and said excitedly: "I grew up watching your shadow puppetry." As he spoke, the old man burst into tears: "I want to watch another shadow puppet and look for my childhood memories." This made Li Juan feel that she chose to inherit shadow puppetry was the right decision.
