The sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 26 February to 1 March 2024, has now come to an end with 15 resolutions aimed at addressing some of the planet's most pressing environmental challenges, including climate change, air pollution and desertification. In many ways, it was a landmark gathering of the world's highest environmental decision-making bodies.

1. Countries reaffirm their commitment to address the triple planetary crisis

After five days of sometimes intense negotiations, on March 1, countries adopted a ministerial declaration pledging to step up efforts to tackle climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The declaration, which was adopted towards the end of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, said that the decline of the natural world poses a serious threat to sustainable development and that international cooperation is essential to create what is known as a "better tomorrow".

2.States have adopted a wide range of resolutions

On February 29, talks at the sixth UN Environment Assembly continued into the night, with countries adopting 15 resolutions addressing some of the planet's most pressing environmental challenges. These include calls for the sustainable mining of so-called energy transition minerals, which are key components of electric vehicle batteries, wind turbines and other renewable energy technologies. Other resolutions urge countries to control pollution caused by chemicals and wastes, combat desertification and land degradation, reduce air pollution, protect the oceans, sustainably manage freshwater**, and better protect the environment during conflict. The UN Environment Assembly resolution is considered the first step in the development of global environmental treaties and national policies.

3.Promote multilateralism

For the first time, the United Nations Environment Assembly devoted a full day to multilateral environmental agreements, a series of international agreements aimed at protecting the planet. These agreements, some of which date back five years, have helped protect endangered species, remediate the ozone layer, control chemical pollution, and more. At the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, many discussions focused on how the various multilateral agreements could work more closely together and how to strengthen linkages with the United Nations Environment Assembly and the United Nations Environment Programme.

We find strength through diverse perspectives," said Leila Benali, President of the Sixth UN Environment Assembly. "Let us be guided by the spirit of multilateralism. ”

4.Scientific reports take center stage

UNEP released three major reports during the sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly, providing policymakers with the scientific evidence they need to make informed environmental decisions.

The Global Waste Management Outlook finds that if humanity wants the planet to remain "livable", the amount of waste generated must be drastically reduced. The Global Resources Outlook reveals that the world's natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate and calls on countries to make comprehensive policy changes to ensure that humanity can live within its means. Finally, the Used Heavy Vehicles and the Environment Report focuses on how countries can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and other pollutants emitted by trucks and other large vehicles.

5.Young people are taking responsibility for the environment

It is impressive that young people have played an important role at the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly. In mid-February, 450 young people from around the world gathered for the Youth Environment Assembly, where they gave their views on the resolution to be proposed at the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly.

6.The world acknowledges that time is running out

The theme of the sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly is that the planet is at a turning point, and humanity must take urgent action to address the triple planetary crisis. Everyone from youth activists to heads of state and ** reflects this idea. Observers say this is an encouraging sign, but the rhetoric must be translated into concrete policies to protect and restore the planet.
