1. A predicate is the soul of a sentence.
We talked about it in the previous article "Clearing Junior High School English 29 in One Month: Overview of Sentence Formation":
There is no predicate clause in English, a predicate is just a verb, or a group of verbs, and a phrase has only one verb.
So when we understand a sentence and can't understand it, we must first find the predicate, and find the predicate, the left hand is the subject, and the right hand is the object. This sentence is understood in an instant, and it is very important, the predicate is the key to open the door.
English is very strict, stipulating that a sentence can only have one predicate verb. (without auxiliary verbs).
That's why there is no predicate clause.
But there is a case where there can be multiple verbs.
I study, live and work in Shijiazhuang.
i study and live and work in shijaizhuang.
This is called a parallel predicate, except in this case. Or with the conjunction, but.
The structure of a set clause also has only one verb or verb phrase.
A clause cannot be used as a predicate.
2. What should I do if a sentence has multiple verbs?
Can there be more than one verb in Chinese?
For example, Chinese: I want to buy a ticket to watch a movie. (In this case, it is called --linkage sentence in Chinese grammar).
Direct translation: I want go buy a ticket see a film(False).
It should be: I want to go to buy a ticket to see a film
So what if a sentence can only have one verb, but in fact multiple verbs are used?
The answer is to eliminate verbs.
Ways to eliminate verbs:
to v. v.ing v.ed
Of the 5 forms of English verbs, only the original form and the past tense can be used as predicates.
For example: write(prototype) wrote(past tense) written writing to write
The addition of the can may auxiliary verb before the prototype does not affect, nor does the addition of s after it.
There is only one verb in a sentence (except for juxtaposition), and the others are to be eliminated, and there are 3 ways to eliminate them, but the meaning is not the same.
It depends on the meaning of the expression.
Writing indicates that it is active or in progress.
Written indicates the past or passive extinguishment with ED.
to write indicates a general or future situation, preceded by to eliminate.
Example sentence: There are 6 million people living in Hong Kong.
there are 6 million people live in hk.(False).
It should be: 6 million people live in hk
Or: there are 6 million people living in hk
3. There is no verb form and past tense as a predicate in the sentence, how to use other verb forms as a predicate.
Subject-verb-object—There can only be one predicate. (except for ties).
Speak spoke can be used as a predicate.
Speaking to Speak is not a verb and what to do if you want to be a predicate? --Add verbs.
is spoken, has spoken, is speaking, and this form is called a compound predicate.
4. Non-predicate verbs.
The other three forms of spoken speaking to speak verbs are active and are called non-predicates.
Non-predicate verbs contain three forms, namely infinitive, gerund, and participle (present and past participles).
It's like oxygen is very active and binds to a lot of substances.
It can be used as a subject, object, definite, and adverbial, but it cannot be a predicate.
