The Zhangji Railway connects Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province and Jining in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, connecting the two places with convenient transportation links. Jining District, which belongs to Ulanqab, is the political, economic, and cultural center of the city. In the ninth year, that is, in 1920, a stone tablet of the Yuan Dynasty engraved with "Jining Road" was found, so the "Jining Reclamation and Governance Bureau" was established, and "Jining" was named after it. **In 13 years, that is, in 1924, Jining County was established, which was subordinate to the Bayantala League Office. In 1945, Jining City was formally established and belonged to Suimeng District. In 2003, with the establishment of Ulanqab, Jining City was upgraded to a prefecture-level city, and the original Jining City was renamed Jining District and reduced to a county-level city.
Jining is famous for its many attractions, such as Wolongshan Ecological Park, Baiquanshan Park, Quanyuling River, Ulanqab Museum, Chahar Folk Museum, Jining Ancient City, Bawanghe National Wetland Park, Jining Battle Site, Ulanqab Square, Ulanqab League Yin Mountain, Ulanqab Laohushan Park, Wumeng Huanghuagou, etc. The "Ulanqab Potato" and "Ulanqab (xiao) Wheat" are listed as "National Agricultural Products Geographical Indication Protection".
The construction of the Zhangji Railway began on May 1, 2006, and was officially opened to traffic on April 28, 2011, and the electrification was completed on March 30, 2019. The railway starts from Kongjiazhuang Station in Zhangjiakou City in the east, passes through Wanquan County, Shangyi County, Xinghe County, Chahar Right Wing Qianqi and Jining District in the west, and finally arrives at Jining South Station. The whole journey is 178 kilometers long, using the first-class standard of the national railway, double-line design, electric traction, ballasted track, automatic blocking, and the design speed is 160 kilometers per hour. There are 9 stations, namely: Kongjiazhuang, Wanquanxi, Xiaoliangou, Youyi Reservoir, Xinghexi, Miaoliang, Xitucheng, Guyingpan and Jiningnan.
The Zhangji Railway is directly or through the connecting line with the Zhangjiakou Railway (Zhangjiakou to Tangshan) and the Beijing-Baotou Railway (Beijing to Baotou). It is interconnected with the Jibao Railway (Jining to Baotou), Jitong Railway (Jining to Tongliao), and Jier Line (Jining to Erenhot). This makes the Zhangji Railway the most convenient passage for personnel and goods transportation between Hebei and Inner Mongolia, shortening the travel time from Zhangjiakou to Ulanqab, which can be easily reached in only two hours.
Through electrification, the Zhangji railway train has reached a speed of 160 kilometers, and the conditions for the speed to increase to 200 kilometers in the later stage have been reserved. This means that there is another efficient and fast railway passage between Zhangjiakou and Ulanqab.
