At the end of the 40s of last century, when Comrade Jiang was studying in the Department of Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, he was fortunate to be a student of Gu Yuxiu, and the friendship between teachers and students was deep.
Gu Yuxiu, a world-renowned scientist, studied at Tsinghua University for eight years before going to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States in August 1923 to further his studies in electrical engineering.
During his five years of study at MIT, he achieved outstanding results, obtaining bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, setting a precedent in the history of MIT for Chinese to obtain doctoral degrees, and achieved remarkable results in this field and became famous.
However, no matter where he was, he never forgot the smoke and war that his country was experiencing.
Since 1929, Gu Yuxiu has devoted himself to the teaching and administration of electrical engineering, and with his outstanding talent, he has traveled to all the famous universities in China, and many universities have hired him as an honorary professor.
What is commendable is that his academic attainments in science and engineering have also made remarkable achievements in the fields of literature and poetry. During his time at Tsinghua University, he co-founded the "Tsinghua Literature Society" with Wen Yiduo, Liang Shiqiu and others, and served as the chairman of the drama group.
His first literary work also attracted a lot of attention in the literary world.
Gu Yuxiu, an all-rounder, is not only talented, but also a person who deeply loves the country. He actively participated in many historical events such as the May Fourth Movement, the farewell of the 19th Route Army to participate in the Songhu War of Resistance, and the acceptance of Japan's surrender, closely linking his personal destiny with the country.
As a result, he was deeply loved by his classmates. In 1946, Comrade Jiang honorably joined the Communist Party of China and embarked on the road of revolution. During this period, his main task was to study, and several teachers during this period brought great inspiration to his life.
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the Shanghai and Chongqing campuses of Nanjing ** University and Jiaotong University were merged, and the new campus was located in Xujiahui, Shanghai. Comrade Jiang also transferred from Nanjing ** University to the new campus in Shanghai to continue his studies.
This precious learning time left a deep impression on him.
The classmates knew Comrade Jiang very well and knew that he was a knowledgeable and talented person, so they gave him the nickname "Dr. Jiang." Just like Mr. Gu Yuxiu, Comrade Jiang not only focused on his science and engineering majors during his college years, but also developed a strong interest in mathematics and literature.
After Mr. Gu Yuxiu was transferred to the director of the Shanghai Education Bureau, he used Saturday to give lectures at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and taught Comrade Jiang and other students calculus. Comrade Jiang admired Teacher Gu Yuxiu very much, and he was also full of enthusiasm for calculus, and the teacher-student friendship between the two was established during this period.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1950, Gu Yuxiu went to the United States through Hong Kong to continue her studies and research, and achieved outstanding academic achievements. He has lived and worked in the United States for many years, but often returns to his home country to visit family.
During his study abroad, Comrade Jiang embarked on the post of socialist construction and always remembered his kind teacher. And Gu Yuxiu is also always paying attention to the development of the motherland, hoping that the motherland can become strong as soon as possible.
In August 1973, Gu Yuxiu returned to China for the first time to visit relatives and was warmly received. **Tell Gu Yuxiu that I hope he can go back to the motherland more often and contribute to the construction of the motherland.
These two had old acquaintances in the anti-Japanese era, and they had endless words after meeting.
Ten years later, Gu Yuxiu once again returned to the land of the motherland that haunted her dreams. And this time, he was warmly received by ***, which is also a reaffirmation of his status in the academic world.
During the meeting between the two, ** personally presented a book that had just been published to show respect for Gu Yuxiu, a knowledgeable scholar. With the deepening of reform and opening up, the pace of the motherland's construction is also accelerating.
And Gu Yuxiu returned to China more and more frequently, not only because of his deep longing for the motherland, but also because of his keen concern for the construction of the motherland. In May 1986, on his way back to China, he participated in the anniversary of the founding of Xi'an Jiaotong University and Shanghai Jiaotong University, and in Shanghai, he also met one of his old students, Comrade Jiang.
The two shared bits and pieces of the past, memories came flooding back to their hearts, and they talked happily. Comrade Jiang, a person who is keen on literature, wrote a poem for Gu Yuxiu, "Differential calculation, incomparable achievements, old age, local feelings." ”
Comrade Jiang personally sent the poem to Gu Yuxiu, who immediately framed it and hung it in his residence in Philadelphia as a permanent memorial. Three years later, when Comrade Jiang assumed the post of general secretary, Gu Yuxiu immediately called to congratulate him, and Comrade Jiang also called back to express his thanks.
On the occasion of the 40 th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Gu Yuxiu was invited to return to China to attend a reception, and was specially received by Comrade Jiang and his family in Zhongnanhai.
Comrade Jiang has always had great respect for his teachers, no matter what position they are in. At the turn of the spring and summer of 1992, a symposium on modern physics was held in Beijing, which was attended by many world-renowned scientists such as Tsung-Dao Lee and Chien-shiung Wu.
Gu Yuxiu also rushed back from the United States to attend the meeting. In his speech, Comrade Jiang made a special mention of Gu Yuxiu, which brought him to the attention of the participants. Shortly after the meeting, Comrade Jiang again invited Gu Yuxiu to Zhongnanhai as a guest.
The two had a long conversation and took a group photo.
In 1995 and 1997, Comrade Jiang called on Professor Gu Yuxiu twice at meetings with overseas Chinese leaders and celebrities in the eastern part of the United States.
When he appeared on the scene, there was a round of applause, and he was hugged into the hall. However, as soon as he sat down, he looked around and asked questions.
In the crowd, an old man with white hair slowly got up and replied: "As soon as Comrade Jiang saw this situation, he immediately got up and stretched out his hand to greet him, held the teacher's hands tightly, and said: Gu Yuxiu also said: When he saw that his wife was also coming, Comrade Jiang enthusiastically walked over and shook hands with his wife to say hello.
These precious images were recorded by the reporters at the scene with cameras, and there were also reports that told the story between teachers and students. Whenever he comes to the United States, Comrade Jiang will take time to visit a teacher whom he has not seen for many years. ”
On October 26, 1997, Comrade ** started a significant state visit. This is the first meeting between the heads of state of China and the United States after the turmoil, and the United States attaches great importance to it, calling it a "historic day."
Clinton specially held a grand welcoming ceremony on the south lawn of the White House to show his respect for Comrade Jiang. Although Comrade Jiang's schedule was full and there were many things that needed to be discussed with the United States, he deliberately took time out to visit his mentor Gu Yuxiu.
This visit is not only a political exchange, but also an emotional bond between people.
Ignoring the dissuasion of the United States, Comrade Jiang insisted on taking his wife to the appointment and rushed from Washington to Philadelphia; although the itinerary was full and the meeting was limited to 20 minutes, Mr. Gu Yuxiu was already 96 years old.
Mr. Gu lived in an ordinary apartment building, and in the living room there were poems inscribed by Comrade Jiang himself, which were given to him by Comrade Jiang back then. The two teachers reunited after a long absence, and Comrade Jiang immediately discovered the poem and was full of emotion.
He said affectionately to Mr. Gu: "You are my teacher, I see you again today, I remember the scene when you taught us calculus more than 50 years ago, and I also remember that you didn't bring a book with you when you came to the stage, and the knowledge is in your mind, which is really amazing."
You are also a dramatist and poet. Comrade Jiang's words made Mr. Gu think a lot, he also recalled the past, and said to Comrade Jiang: "At the age of 96, my thinking is still quick, I talked with you a lot, and I also made a pot of Chinese green tea for you.
We also opened the photo album and reminisced about the past years. The meeting, which was originally planned to last 20 minutes, lasted 40 minutes. Before leaving, Comrade Jiang also gave Mr. Gu a set of photo albums reflecting China's 5,000 years of culture.
The deep friendship between Comrade Jiang and Professor Gu Yuxiu and his wife continued until Professor Gu's death. After the news of Professor Gu's death reached Zhongnanhai, Comrade Jiang was deeply saddened, and he immediately sent a message of condolences to Professor Gu's wife, pointing out in his telegram that Professor Gu has always been concerned about the great cause of the motherland's reunification, has often offered suggestions and suggestions for the motherland's reunification, and his spirit will always inspire the Chinese to move forward.
No matter when and where, Comrade Jiang would always remember Professor Gu's kindness, greet Professor Gu every festive season, and write the title of Professor Gu's book many times.
