The predecessor of the school was Jinan School, which was founded in Nanjing in 1906. It was later moved to Shanghai and renamed National Jinan University in 1927. During the Anti-Japanese War, it was relocated to Jianyang. In 1946, it moved back to Shanghai, and in 1949, it was merged with Fudan University, Jiaotong University and other universities. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, it was rebuilt in Guangzhou in 1958, and was suspended during the "Cultural Revolution" before being resumed in Guangzhou in 1978.

Xing Feng, born in July 1965, graduated from the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree. Subsequently, he received his master's and doctorate degrees from the Department of Civil Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1989 and 1992, respectively, which laid the foundation for his future research in the field of civil engineering.
Since April 1993, Xing Feng has been working in the Department of Civil Engineering of Shenzhen University and has gradually emerged. His career has seen him rise through the ranks at Shenzhen University, from Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee to Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
From January 2005 to December 2012, Xing Feng served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shenzhen University, during which he was elected"Outstanding talents of the new century of the Ministry of Education"and postdoctoral research internationally. In addition to actively promoting scientific research projects in China, he also expanded international cooperation by serving as a senior visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego in 2008.
From May 2014 to January 2016, Xing Feng served as Secretary of the Party Committee and Dean of Shenzhen Information Vocational and Technical College, demonstrating his outstanding ability in the leadership of the university. Subsequently, he served as the Deputy Director General and a member of the Party Leadership Group of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education from February 2016 to October 2019, responsible for the leadership of the Department of Education.
From October 2019 to March 2021, Xing Feng served as a member of the Education Working Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, and actively participated in the education affairs of Guangdong Province. From March 2021 to September 2023, Xing Feng served as Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Dean of Guangzhou Navigation University, providing support for the management and development of the university. In November 2023, he was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Division of Civil, Hydraulic and Architectural Engineering) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of civil engineering.
In January 2024, Xing Feng was appointed president and deputy party secretary of Jinan University, marking a new step in his career in university leadership.
In terms of scientific research, Xing Feng has made remarkable research achievements on the safety, practicality and sustainability of concrete structures. The project he presided over and completed has broken through a number of key technologies, realized the large-scale application of construction waste recycled aggregate, and achieved the international leading level. He also won many honors such as the National Technological Invention Award and the first prize of the provincial and ministerial level.
