Life, Life, 210x105cm, 2011.
Sun Hongli's thematic works are faithful to reality. He takes the natural world and human thoughts and emotions as the source of his creation, reproduces the personality characteristics of objective objects, and reveals the essential characteristics of life with real and typical images. Painting is a sensory experience that allows for total immersion in a dialogue between color, texture, line, form, composition, rhythm, mark, and distraction, allowing thoughts to gush out. The oil painting "Life, Life" depicts a disaster relief scene after the collapse of a building. There are only two characters in the picture as a link between emotion and reason, and the characters in the picture are similar and superimposed on each other, this kind of picture does not have that sense of impact and shock, but it has an extremely profound appeal outside the picture. This work can be understood in this way: Sun Hongli takes the expression of the real existence and mental state of human beings as the most essential starting point of art, and he tries to express the pain and struggle of human beings in his own way, shaping images, pouring out emotions, and creating life on the canvas. His honesty and authenticity towards art may be what makes his work shocking and timelessly charming.
Ancient City Relic Rhyme" oil painting.
Most of Sun Hongli's landscape paintings are sketches. In summary, it has the following characteristics.
Sun Hongli's work is a succinct summary. Every true artist follows his intuition in relation to his own historical period and background, trying a new trajectory that no one knows exists. Sun Hongli does not pursue those famous mountains and rivers, but seeks some ordinary scenes, these so-called mediocre themes have not even been seen by our own eyes, but the painter refines the scenery through the "filter" of his own eyes. This kind of attention is the result of the symbiotic coexistence between him and the object of his attention, and there is also his attachment to this land and his love after dreams. It is this relationship that enables him to comprehend the true meaning of nature, to sense the greater breath of nature, and to condense the simple and generalized artistic language.

Sun Hongli's works have a certain imagery. "Image" is a fusion of objective image and subjective mind into something with a certain meaning and mood. Oil painting was originally based on the classicist painting style, which focused on the three-dimensional image of "light and shadow". Classicism, romanticism, and realism in the development of oil painting have nothing to do with "imagery", until the rise of impressionism and abstraction, it is related to the word "image", and we can also understand one-sidedly that Chinese imagery oil painting is a comprehensive extension of foreign impressionism and abstraction. Looking back at Sun Hongli's landscape sketches, the sky, the ground, and the main object are all realistic, and the outstanding feature is that there are many rhythmic lines for the shaping of the subject, which have agility and can be seen the passion of the painter when creating.

From the perspective of composition, Sun Hongli's works have a strong sense of form, the fast and loose brushwork in the painting, emphasizing the solid structure to construct the natural scene, forming different compositional relationships such as sparseness, gathering and dispersion, overlapping, occlusion, etc., he decomposes and reconstructs the elements of the picture, and all the divided spaces are the organic whole that constitutes the picture, which also reflects his unique understanding of the structural consciousness in modern painting.

In terms of color, Sun Hongli's works are elegant and pure. The simple color and elegant tones of the work are like a prose poem. Many pictures use flat painting techniques in a large area, and the background and the subject form a strong contrast relationship, which goes beyond the passive depiction of natural colors, and carries out a subjective color treatment on the picture, pouring out inner feelings, and greatly enhancing the expressiveness of color language. In the use of color, the painter focuses on the way in which color gives emotional content to the picture. The larger the block, the more powerful the color, so that there is a large area of smudge in his image, and then, in the constant combination of multiple colors, a whole new world is established in the process of countless overlapping overlays.
Rest, oil on canvas, 60x80cm, 2021.
Sun Hongli's works have a humanistic temperament. A work of art always embodies a certain thought and emotion of the artist, and a person who loves nature must be a person with rich feelings and a noble humanistic spirit. His work is free from the constraints of traditional frameworks, nor is it limited by academic norms. His expression is to follow the needs of the heart. His expressive techniques are diverse, such as metaphor, metaphor, appropriation, and deconstruction. He uses clear thinking, simple and clear expressions, without any pretense or trickery, and reflects the existence of life with a mixture of traditional and contemporary styles. Blending flat and three-dimensional, expressive brushstrokes and vibrant colors, he thoughtfully balances various elements of nature to depict landscape sketches with great tension. This state of mind, which pursues sincerity and authenticity, eventually leads to a style of painting that returns to the basics.

As an organizer and leader of art activities, Sun Hongli has rich life experience, and he sublimates his love for natural landscapes and his perception of social life into strong and quintessential thoughts and emotions, and paints works with rich humanistic spirit. He extracts heavy cultural and aesthetic elements from nature and transforms them into his personal visual order. After the transformation of visual language, the viewer can enter his inner world and understand the ebb and flow of his soul because of the resonance. Through a series of practices, he tries to get rid of the shackles of art, let life bloom in the vast land with its most essential and simple appearance, and awaken people's cognition of life.
