Painter Zhou Liang: Melting the north and south landscapesCreate a leading way

The first time I met Zhou Liang, it was in the studio of his home in Shanghai, except for a calligraphy and painting table in a room of about ten square meters, the rest of the place was full of various books and scrolls, and the finished and semi-finished products of his recent creations were hung on the wall. "It's a place where you can calm down and think, plan, and paint! Zhou Liang Zhou Liang is a rising star in the Shanghai landscape painting world, he has a generous face, like a full northern man, but his speech and demeanor do not lose the delicacy and thoughtfulness of the south. Zhou Liang and Zhengchun, born in Shanghai in June 1972, are currently members of the Shanghai Artists Association, academicians of the Shanghai Chunjiang Painting Academy, academicians of the Shanghai Hudong Painting Academy, teachers of the Jiangsu Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting, and graduate students of the Senior Landscape Painting Class of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy. His works have won six national awards, and his paintings combine the strengths of the northern and southern schools, forming his own ingenious creative style, injecting a new wind into the landscape painting world and leading the innovation of young and middle-aged painters in Shanghai.

Influenced by his father, he attaches equal importance to learning and practice.

Zhou Liang's father, Zhou Cheng, is a well-known landscape master in the contemporary Shanghai school of painting, with more than 50 years of pen cultivation, many works as a national gift by the people of Shanghai to foreign dignitaries, and was also invited to Zhongnanhai Huairen Hall to make hanging wall paintings. Zhou Liang was nurtured by his father since he was a child and developed a strong interest in painting. "When I was seven or eight years old, I came into contact with *** such as "Three Kingdoms", "The Biography of Yue Fei", and "Journey to the West", and I was immediately attracted to it, and I began to learn to copy. Zhou Liang recalls that he was not gifted and endowed with unique talents, "I always insisted on painting because of interest and fun." "At the age of fifteen or sixteen, he began to systematically train professionally, learning drawing and coloring. In 1992, he graduated from the Shanghai Fine Arts Secondary School, and then studied at the Fine Arts College of Shanghai Normal University, where he specialized in landscape painting and art theory.

The traditional teaching method of Chinese painting emphasizes oral teaching, and my father taught me less orally and more by heart. Under the inspiration and guidance of his father, Zhou Liang continued to expand his own path of artistic creation. "A good landscape painting cannot be made behind closed doors, it must be close to life. While studying, Zhou Liang constantly strengthened the practice of his own artistic literacy and drew inspiration from life. In recent years, his work has been more infused with his own enlightenment and emotion about historical exchanges, natural changes and cultural progress. Some seniors in the industry once pointed out that the most difficult thing for young people to do when they enter the landscape painting is to grasp the spirit of the landscape and let go of the feelings of the landscape, and Zhou Liang knows how to make the brush and ink strive to intersect with the landscape in his creation, and not be bound by the natural form.

Meditation and precipitation can only be thinned by accumulation.

The path of artistic creation is very lonely, and it requires a sense of paranoia and concentration. Zhou Liang said frankly that some of his painter friends have been unable to sell a painting for several years, but they have always insisted on creating, and for painters, loneliness is the norm. "If you really calm down and do what you like to the extreme, you will definitely get something. It is this kind of mentality of meditation and precipitation that has benefited Zhou Liang a lot.

Climbing Mount Tai, going to Huashan, walking on the grassland, exploring the snow field, visiting the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, Zhou Liang traversed the famous mountains and rivers of the motherland, absorbed the natural charm of mountains and rivers, enriched the source of pen and ink in the chest, and enriched the artistic skills in the wrist with the background of the masterpieces of the past dynasties.

Art that comes from life is the art that truly has vitality. Recalling the most exciting creative experience in the past few years, Zhou Liang remembered one of his paintings "Moonlight in the Heart" a few years ago. It was from the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River to return, he was infected by the majestic and magnificent scenery of the motherland, full of affection for three consecutive months, and finally this work won the Chinese Artists Association "Haichao Cup" National Chinese Painting Exhibition Bronze Award. In Zhou Liang's view, there must be three prerequisites for the innovation of art: first, the maturity of brushwork, second, the attainment of literary accomplishment, and third, the accumulation of life. "Art is a synthesis of various art categories, and only thick accumulation can thin hair. Zhou Liang said that the older generation of artists such as Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, and Liu Haisu left precious works of art to future generations, and more importantly, their creative concepts, artistic cultivation and life attitudes are more worthy of the younger generations to figure out and learn, and future generations should strive to form their own artistic style.

From the age of forty to sixty-five is the first period of the painter's creation, this period is full of energy, the technique is mature, and the skill and heat of painting are in place. Zhou Liang said that he is gradually getting better, and the spirit of his works is easier to refine during this time period, and it is easy to produce fine products that can withstand the test of the times. About 50 works a year is one of the goals he has set for himself, "The number of works is not too much, but whether you really work hard to complete each creation." ”

Fusion of the north and the south style of painting is its own.

The northern landscape is magnificent, and the southern landscape is delicate and delicate. Zhou Liang has always wanted to find a balance between the two, forming a style of fusion. Yu Haidong, a well-known art critic, once commented on Zhou Liang's works: "The style of some paintings is completely different from the landscape of Beizong, and it looks like a wonderful feeling of watching the mountains and entering the country without knowing where you are." "Zhou Liang's works are different from the general abstract style, and his ink-colored mountains and rivers have a kind of structural change of fault reorganization, thus creating an illusory and real landscape portrait and artistic conception beauty. No matter what he paints, Zhou Liang likes to read it carefully before putting it into practice, and regards the ideological nature of the artistic structure and the integrity of the form, meaning and charm as particularly important. For him, a successful work depends on thinking before writing. Even with the time of conception, a work often takes one to two weeks or even longer.

The creative concept is always changing, from composition to technique, which changes every few years. Zhou Liang said that his creation is also constantly innovating, and improving his artistic realm in the process of constantly denying himself. After painting "Moonlight in the Heart" for three months, Zhou Liang already felt that there were many debatable points in terms of composition and use of ink. Previously, he traveled in Yunnan, and a large-scale painting about the colorful Yunnan landscape was conceived in his mind, "When I think about it, this work will raise my understanding of landscape painting to a new level." Zhou Liang was full of confidence.

At present, the living environment faced by young and middle-aged painters has changed compared with a few years ago. Zhou Liang said, "The art market is gradually returning to rationality, and it is difficult to go back to the era when you could sell a ** at will." At the same time, with the continuous increase in the cost of creation, the road of professional painters will be difficult. However, Zhou Liang firmly believes that art is evergreen, and the times will have his own way of scouring thousands of waters, blowing sand into gold, and eliminating the so-called "tide makers", real artists will be able to stick to their original intentions and dreams, and practice their eternal artistic life in the long river of years.
