In an industry where male designers are constantly rotating to creatively manage brands, Chloé puts women in power, which is appreciated in the industry.
The 42-year-old Kamali embodies the brand's strong vision, looking back at Chloé's collections from the '70s of the 20th century and putting her own spin on bohemian fashion.
For her debut show, she said in a pre-show interview: "I wanted a fresh start, lightness, movement, looseness, a strong use of proportions, a great outerwear: an iconic and timeless wardrobe piece that can be considered chloé. ”
She paid particular attention to Karl Lagerfeld's Chloé collection from the '70s of the 20th century, which was known for its "effortless femininity", which can also be used to sum up Kamali's first product.
The show opened with a model wearing a cropped black leather cape and a flowing white long-sleeved mini dress. This bohemian festive fashion runs through the entire collection:
patchwork flared jeans with a ruffled lace shirt; The skirt is sheer, foamy, and paired with a cape coat; A leather jacket with tassels gives it a special feel.
It's perhaps no surprise that shirts are an important part of the collection: Kamali is obsessed with shirts and tells her that she owns between 600 and 700 vintage styles.
The color scheme is muted – all beige shades are used with peach, light blue, etc. – while styling is simple and effortless. The models, including fashion names like Doutzen Kroes and Vittoria Ceretti, wore wavy hair and simple makeup.
Even the accessories seem to date back to the 70s of the 20th century. Statement sunglasses are paired with plenty of chunky gold jewellery and matching gold hardware.
While the collection is inspired by the past, Kamali truly brings it back to the times. There's a lot of contemporary styling in it, including a fanatical interpretation of the logo, with some models wearing gold belts with "chloe" spelled out in cursive lettering.
Kamali also seems to offer her own take on the styles that are currently dominating the runway, such as the trend of ultra-shorts and boots.
She succeeded Uruguayan designer Gabriela Hearst last October, who brought a more artisanal and colorful aesthetic to the Chloé brand.
German-born Kamali has a long history with the brand: she started as an intern and worked with former chief designers such as Phoebe Philo and Clare Waight Keller, while also working with Anthony Vaccarello of Saint Laurent.
At the end of the show, she bowed excitedly in the same outfit as she had on the runway: flared jeans, a beige shirt and loose hair. Her son ran over and hugged her, creating a heartwarming moment for the guests.
Earlier this month, Chloe released a series of portraits to preview the upcoming collection, starring model Jerry Hall, one of Lagerfeld's muses when he was creative director at Chloé.
Hall sat in the front row in a classic drawstring beige trench coat and walked the runway for her latest collection, alongside her model daughter, Georgia May Jagger, who wore a furry black leather jacket.
Considering that the collection is essentially an ode to bohemian fashion, she is better suited to be in the front row than actress Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung, who championed the style in the 90s.
